Boston - Week 1

This first week in Boston was really enjoyable – trying to adapt to the weather and environment, trying to find our way around and most of all getting over jet-lag. It’s been a really exciting experience thus far and I’m absorbing in every moment.

The trip to the Head Start at Maverick was enriching and inspiring, as I finally saw for myself the childcare environment in United States. The interaction with the children and teachers reminded me of the reason why I enrolled into the Wheelock program and reminded me of my passion in the early childhood field. I’ve learnt every several things that I thought were interesting and could be included in the Singapore classroom. The class teacher filled up a daily communication sheet, which is given to parents every day when they come to fetch their children. In this communication sheet, teachers are to fill in what was done in class and for younger children, the amount of food and the time when they used the toilet. I personally feel that these are information that parents might be interested to know about and would be beneficial for consistent communication between the teachers and parents.

The dinner at president Jackie’s backyard was awesome, as I interacted with the faculty members and even chatting with “old” professors. It was a great evening with great food, great ambience and most importantly, great company! I totally loved it!

Since my arrival in Boston, I’ve met really friendly people. There are so many of the that my hands cannot count them all!!! People here are so pleasant that I want to bring this culture back home to Singapore. Though the kindness of Bostonians is a small gesture, they are actually huge favours for us lost foreign students!

Classes have been great, learning from Nancy again. We were warned of feeling the tiredness from jet-lag, however, I have really felt that tiredness during class. I guess classes are just too interesting. The interns – Emma, Alyssa, Katherine and Brandon – have helped us and supported us so much in our adapting to Boston. THANK YOU!!! And Lauren, as you read this, I thank you for preparing everything for us even before we arrived. I feel so pampered and loved by Wheelock in Boston. I think I want to stay in Boston!!!!!!!
